In a world full of color, focused on the black and white. A survey of the streets of Brooklyn, NY in the autumn of 2008. A portrait of a place, a 'Sign O' the Times,' and my b&w color video. What is lost and what is gained from this limited perspective? The first in a series.

{+}{–} Richard Garet - 'Brooklyn Panorama, Light Compositions 1 - 9'

Brooklyn Panorama - Light Composition 1 to 9 is a 9 channel video installation that resulted from the appropriation of over 1500 Internet-found-pictures of Brooklyn from different decades. All the photographs were carefully observed, reduced, and ultimately divided in 9 groups in accordance to their period or location characteristics such as historical pictures, Brooklyn Bridge pictures, abandoned buildings pictures, etc. The pictures were treated through various processes of digital manipulation exploiting characteristics born within the binary environment such as glitches and permutations, and considering light explorations and form as key elements in the work. The pictures were also approached and manipulated in such a way that it created an optical arena of rigorous applications of flickering and overlaying methods explored in real-time-processing. These real-time-processed explorations were digitally recorded and then reworked. Such approaches transformed the original static aesthetic of the pictures into a living architecture of moving images, vibrating and finding their own expression in time. The work reveals itself not only as a concrete and it-referential visual composition about Brooklyn but also as an orchestrated arrangement of concrete light through 9 video output channels, distinct from each other, and identical in duration.

{+}{–} Rikayo Horimizu, Inhye Lee and Ganesh Ramanathan - 'Grand Street'

Comparison of old stores and new stores on the Grand Street (plus Graham),which used to be a main business/trade path to connect the Williamsburg waterfront and Bushwick Avenue. Several interviews with the business owners show how the neighborhood evolves and changes.

Bouncing and leaping off of city walls, dancing in the middle of the street, playing with light and reflection, the dancer grooves with the city. Duet or battle, Street Moves follows the unique interplay between choreographed and improvised movement with Brooklyn.

{+}{–} Sarah Nelson Wright - 'Fillmore Place'

FILLMORE PLACE is a video portrait of a one-block street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, as experienced by the residents, many who have lived there for decades. Old and new residents alike share a love of the block, the people and the particular character and atmosphere of the street. The piece interfaces with the complexities of gentrification. The residents' voices paint a unified portrait of life on the block and the stakes of rapid development getting pushed forward, while also expressing varied opinions about what gentrification and development has meant for the neighborhood.

Music by Sasha Karmanskiy.

Brooklyn Canals is a series of short videos studying Brooklyn's waterways. Some of these canals are heavily used for industrial purposes while others help protect wildlife and serve as brief oasis within a busy city life. These videos study the landscape, environment and surroundings of these water bodies and their presence and place within the city.

MadFlat A/V duo is based in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood and is made up of Sima (VJ VisualHornHonkinG) and Max (DJ ActivePhaze). In their second appearance at AV Brooklyn Festival, the team focuses on the urban spirit of the street-life inspired colors of Kings Borough. Images, beats and poetry reflect Brooklyn's original vibration and attitude.

An interactive video installation that takes you on a unique trip of the daily lives of eight strangers. Come in, walk around, travel through time, make some new friends. Club Hello provides an atypical multimedia experience each time you step in. Rearrange time any way you want in the virtual world of Club Hello by taking a stroll through the physical world. Everyone's presence counts and changes the timeline. Come here, you, yea you, I'm talking to you; come to Club Hello.
